Should the city of Pripyat be saved?:

December 14, in Ukraine is the «Day of honor of liquidators of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster».

Many may have doubts, why need this holiday, and why 14 December is set to honor participants in liquidation.

The fact is that November 30 1986 the construction of the sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth unit of Chernobyl nuclear power plant, was completed and December 14 the newspaper «Pravda » reported that the State Commission passed into operation a set of defense equipment.

Since 1986, liquidators gather to celebrate their victory. In 1994, Chernobyl public organizations in Ukraine wrote to the heads of state, which proposed to establish a calendar day. That time a formal decision was not taken, but the liquidators themselves have begun to celebrate this date. The celebration was officially allowed, but there was no recognition of the day at the state level.

Making public the status of « Liquidator’s Day » once again reminded people about the problems of Chernobyl liquidators, one of the most important is an extremely low level of pension - insufficient to live. Directly linked to this issue and others - the problem of the status of liquidators of the Chernobyl accident. Only the first 5 thousand of those who took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident officially became known as liquidators, but since 1992 all remaining were given «cards» as affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

Despite all the difficulties and problems, liquidators call December 14 their holiday.
