Chernobyl nuclear power plant may be deprived of new containment

The beginning of construction of a new protective shelter above the destroyed fourth nuclear unit at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant may be postponed to 1-3 years because standards of French contractors do not meet national standards of Ukraine, Radio Liberty reports with reference to anonymous spokesmen for Ukraine’s authorities.

The beginning of a new containment’s construction was scheduled at summer 2009. Highly radioactive remains in the active zone of nuclear reactor, that had been destroyed while an explosion on April 26 1986, are located inside the containment above the fourth nuclear unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Scientists fear containment that was built after the accident, is under threat of destruction, the Segodnya newspaper reports with reference to RBC-Ukraine. As a reminder, in February 2009 Ukraine signed an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on grant in the amount of EUR 135 mn for construction of containment at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant In 2007 French consortium Novarka won bidding and got the right to build a new containment at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
