Ukrainians driven crazy with terrible rumors

On Tuesday people began to send messages that the wall of containment at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant fell down. Psychiatrists accuse politicians of it and predict it might become even worse, the Segodnya newspaper reports.
“Everything is all right in Chernobyl. Rumors about fall of the wall appear every day. I have even archive of such messages. It is being done to disrupt resort season. Allegedly, radiation is in Ukraine”, Alexander Syrota, vice president of public organization Tsentr Pripyat.com told. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant authority have assured of the same too.
Recently residents of Zaporizhya were anxious about threat of Dnipro hydro power plant that had been predicted by local prophetess. In Kyiv region people were spreading panic because of “cistern of mercury that had been spilled”. For a few weeks already Lviv region has been frightened with a monster devouring rabbits.
According to the Emergencies Ministry press service chief Ihor Krol, false information about major accidents appears traditionally at the beginning of resort season – beginning from April till June. Krol does not think the number of rumors has been increased this year.
According to psychologists, recently rumors have been increased on the basis of panic moods relating to the political and economic instability in the country. “Taking into consideration instable situation in Ukraine and coming presidential elections, rumors may increased in autumn already”, psychologist Alexander Hubenko supposes.
An executive director of the Association of psychiatrists of Ukraine Semen Hluzman agrees with this. According to him, false information about catastrophes relates to the political crisis. “Firstly, somebody just wants to trace how false information is being spread. Secondly, some people like to be a source of bad information, center of attention. The heat may influence on them too”, Oleg Pokalchuk says.
The political scientist Kost Bondarenko is sure rumors are being activated on the eve of elections. He has not ruled out politicians may use such rumors before the presidential elections and now are testing it.
